In November
1933 a bridge was constructed over the Garraway Stream, linking Mahdia to
Bartica by trail. This cable suspension bridge was named “DenhamBridge”
after the then Colonial Governor Sir Edward Denham. The DenhamSuspension Bridge, which is also called
the GarrawayStreamBridge, served as a vital access to
the early Gold and Diamond fields of Guyana. The
bridge was erected directly over the PotaroRiver.
Hiked to this today - a 30km return walk, not for the faint hearted! Get there quick before it gets demolished and you lose this iconic landmark as part of the "rebuilding" of the Bartica - Mahdia Road
