There are countless rapids and waterfalls Kaieteur Falls on the Potaro river along the route of the Essequibo, and its 20 km wide estuary is dotted with numerous small islands. New Amsterdam Berbice "Guyana"

The Town of New Amsterdam is located on the Eastern Coast of Guyana, which over looks the Atlantic Ocean. New Amsterdam developed as a settlement, for the Dutch besides Nassau located 55 miles up the Berbice River and Canje River. Around 1784 the Dutch relocated the town. The name New Amsterdam is colonial related, it originated from the Providence Amsterdam in Holland. New Amsterdam was established between 1785-1790 with the government for Berbice, at that time the town was little more than a forest settlement with little house, no roads and no drains. Since then New Amsterdam quickly started to develop, because of its fertile soils which are very great for the cultivations. Shanice Bacchus-Jones Guyanese born U.S Model/Designer

Shanice Bacchus was born in New Amsterdam, East Berbice, on July 29, 1989. She is the third of three siblings. As a child in Guyana, Bacchus undertook a few assignments to appear as a model in advertisements, but her career choice was suppressed by the reality of life in the Ancient County. However, upon migrating, almost four years ago, the urge to pose before the cameras resurfaced.

Photographers quickly developed interest in Shanice Bacchus, and, over the years, she has fallen deeper and deeper in love with the art of modelling. For her, it is not just about standing in front of the camera, but rather about doing something she loves.

Most Guyanese would not know “Raye 6″, but she is a Brooklyn artist who is moving forward quickly and inexorably in the music industry. And Shanice Bacchus has been one of Raye 6’s “Bubble Girls,” aka back-up dancers, for almost three years, during which Shanice has grown tremendously. She has hosted parties as a Bubble Girl while wearing the group’s trademark items, which include a 31-inch ponytail.

From being somewhat shy to stepping out on stage in confidence, Shanice has truly come a long way. With this career choice, she has been featured in ‘Source’ and ‘No Labelz’ magazines, in which she has received a three-page model spread.

Two years before migrating, she attended a summer sewing program in New Amsterdam hosted by Minerva Peters, where she learnt the art of becoming a seamstress. But, over the years, she has been inactive in that hobby, pursuing what she thought were bigger things. She got married in 2009, changing her name to Shanice Jones; and in August 2010, she started to showcase her hidden talent of designing when she opened her boutique, Her collection has since turned numerous heads, and has been improving constantly. It has been featured in several photo shoots and fashion shows in the U.S.

Currently, Jones is enrolled in West Barron Acting School, in New York, for its winter 2011 semester. This includes studying Film, Showcase & Monologue.

She landed her first gig as an actress in a music video shoot for Haitian celebrity singer Casley Cass, acting as his fiancée. The concept of the video is that she catches him cheating with another woman.

Eddy Grant Guyana’s musical history

The first 20th century saw a number of popular Guyanese dance bands. By the 1960s, these big bands with prominent horns, woodwinds and other instruments became less popular in favor of a wave of string bands. Among these famous singers is star singing sensation Edmond Montague “Eddy Grant” who was born March 5th 1948 in PlaisanceGuyana.

Some of Guyana musical gene includes:

Shanto
Shanto is a form of Guyanese music, related to both calypso and mento. It became a major part of early popular music through its use in Guyanese vaudeville shows. These songs are topical and light-hearted, often accompanied by a guitar.

Calypso

Calypso is especially popular in Guyana, which was imported from Trinidad. Calypso is lyrically oriented and is often played during celebrations like Mashramani.

Indo-Caribbean

Indian music arrived with immigrants from South Asia. This originally included folk music played with dhantal, tabla, sitar, harmonium and dholak, which later including tassa drums. Music was mostly Hindu songs called bhajans.

Reggae

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style, reggae is most played in Guyana parties and clubs
